'The Ice Box Dun Laoire'

'The Ice Box Dun Laoire'

This is a painting done very recently. I was very happy with the out come of the colours in general. I like the splotch in the foreground water - it gives a sense of  truthfulness and speed in my work. This is the beauty of watercolour - anything can literally happen in an instant. I love the cloud formation that came out of the blue…(excuse the pun). These qualities form the beauty of watercolour at it’s very best.

You may ask: “Why is he always painting the ‘Ice Box’, well for one, it’s full of activity and life. The colours of the trawlers and the freshness of the sea breeze on your face - nothing like it. I love to walk there too. So, i guess i ‘kill two birds with the one stone’..so to speak!

Beautiful piece! I love the rhythm of form and colour. I was going to ask how you accomplished the cloud forms but see now that it was spontaneous. I love how both the clouds and water punctuate the touch of the artist. I’m not a fan of photo realistic artwork…I want the artist to speak to me through his/her memories/eyes/paint/symbols. Art for me is a visual story…and Nick, you tell your stories exceptionally well.

Hi Susanne,
Your SO kind. It’s people like you who keep me totally inspired.
Working without photography is not hard for me, as I’ve always been used to bringing my sketchbooks every time I’m out and about.
Your right - art is visual. I feel strongly against the use of photo/graphics integrated into fine art. It’s about honesty and from the soul/heart i truly believe.
